Shake Your Minnow
A soft-plastic minnow rigged on a jig has been a long-time staple, but the rise of forward-facing sonar (FFS) has given the technique new life. Today, tournament bass and walleye anglers rely on ultra-realistic minnow-imitating baits like the CrushCity™ Freeloader®, Mooch Minnow™ and The Jerk™ to trigger bites from educated fish that pass on lesser offerings. The method—often referred to as shaking a minnow, hover strolling, or moping (among other names)—has become one of the most effective sonar-driven presentations in fishing. And even without electronics, it still shines from the boat or bank.
At its core, shaking a minnow is a system. The plastic, jig, rod, and line work together as a cohesive unit. Anglers bring the bait to life by shaking the rod tip with quick wrist shakes, which make the minnow roll and flash like the real thing. The result: an irresistible presentation for any predator fish that eats minnows, which is nearly all of them.
Plastics
Rapala product designers worked with the world's top professional anglers to help bring the CrushCity Freeloader, Mooch Minnow and The Jerk to life. Custom and proven fish-catching colours, combined with multiple sizes, let you match forage and fish moods with precision. Details such as bait texture, colour gradations, and ideal softness (durometer) bring these plastics to life when paired with the right jig and rod manipulation.
Jigs
Jigs are the delivery system. VMC® offers an extensive lineup of both tungsten and lead jigs in a wide range of sizes, colours, and hook styles for exceptional hookup and retention. To start, the VMC Tungsten Swimbait Jig is available in six weights and two hook sizes to cover a range of depths and plastic pairings. The ultra-premium VMC RedLine hook and conical keeper lock plastics in place and keep fish buttoned. The Hybrid Swimbait Jig offers a lead-head option with a strong wide gap hook and spring keeper, ideal for larger plastics and heavier line applications. For versatility, the proven Tungsten Mooneye and Neon Mooneye Jigs come in a wide range of colours and weights, and are built around ultra-sharp VMC Premium high-carbon hooks.
Rods
Shaking a minnow is a freestyle presentation driven by the hand-to-rod connection. Success depends on feel and control. The 13 Fishing® Myth and Oath spinning rods strike a balance between sensitivity, action, and lightweight performance—ideal for all-day fishing without fatigue. A sensitive and responsive rod tip is crucial for imparting the action, while the tip transitions to a midsection with perfect flex (taper) for powerful hooksets and keeping hooks buried.
Line
Line choice completes the system, with most pros favoring the use of a braided mainline to a fluorocarbon leader at the business end. Braids such as Sufix® 832® Advanced Superline® and Sufix® Revolve™ deliver exceptional casting distance, sensitivity, and strength-to-diameter efficiency. Topping off the setup with a nearly invisible Sufix® Advance® Fluorocarbon Leader adds stealth for fooling line-shy fish and a little stretch for forgiveness.
Shaking a minnow isn’t just a lure—it’s a complete system. Pair the right plastic, jig, rod, and line, and you’ll start catching more fish in a range of situations.
